My Outlook-using clients have found Outlook 2003 considerably more
reliable. I just shudder.  2003 is reputed not to go critical at 2GB for
the PST.

Are there any cute database-fixer programs offered by said MVP courtiers?
I've used one for OE, to good effect - recovered about half of a 2G
database that the owner had let go critical.  I was amazed.  The tamper
must have been badly designed.
