The following is not what you asked for, but when I played with whois a
couple of years ago I came across a system that worked much better than
some other things I tried:

http://whois.bw.org/

There was a Perl script version that I could run on my computer (i.e. my
computer did the whois queries itself, without being a conventional whois
server).

Try a couple of queries in the web form to see if it returns good info,
and thus might be worth investigating. I would like to hear what you learn.

John
