Hello James, I wish you a nice day!
JB> I'll be! That can be like asking how big an acre is. "Depends where
JB> you're buyin'."
Go ahead, ask ! In my first years as a co-pilot on DC-8s,
I got teamed up with a senior Capt. whose father was part of the
surveying team, western Canada. He said: a mile is 5280', a
section is 1/8 of a mile, ie: 660', an acre is 1/10 of this in
width but 660' long. Not a square area. Rather rectangular.
A chain is 66' long. Are you not glad that you asked ?
JB> No, it's altitude is rather high, but I suspect you're talking
JB> altitude it 'appears' above curvature.
You Merikan can not use Shakespear properly. Hooots ! The
word altitude refers to the angle in degrees above the horizon,
height is how high an object is, airplane, tree or balloon.
Altitude now is an accepted misnomer for height.
JB> No... Wouldn't the sun *never* touch the horizon on June 21, at true
JB> N.pole? What about the refraction from atmosphere,
JB> saying nothing how long it take our venturer to walk that far...
You are awake and getting there. I was talking about
theory. In the field, one has to account for temperature that
varies the density of the air thus the pressure that will
refract the image of the astral body under scrutiny. In the
above exemple, the center of the sun would be on the horizon,
one has to account for semi-diameter.
JB> Do you have netmail there, JP?
