Inverter technology and R410a refrigerant.

Older heat pumps have a single-speed compressor. They cycle on and off to
maintain the set temperature. Modern units have a variable speed
compressor, which runs just fast enough to maintain the set temperature.
The inverter takes in the AC mains, converts it to DC then back to
variable-frequency AC. The motor speed depends on the frequency of the AC.
They typically reduce energy consumption by about 30% compared to a similar
capacity non-inverter unit and perform better in unfavourable conditions,
such as low outside temperatures in heating mode or high outside
temperatures in cooling mode.
