I've done battle with that too. I now prefer to write documents in simple
HTML using a text editor and the basic tags. The ones I use the most are:
a, br, h1, h2, h3, p, ul, ol, li.

I find it easy because I started my document writing using SGML when I was
with IBM. All of IBM's manuals were written using SGML and a corporate
style set. I still have a DOS WYSIWYG word processor that outputs SGML, and
a translator program that converts SGML to HTML.
