I help run a bbs in Adelaide, Australia which has a couple of Optima 288's 
with 5.4 AU firmware, and a couple of Motorola Lifestyles with SW REV 2. 
They can talk to each other alright, but my conclusion is that the earlier 
V.34 firmware versions had problems talking to some earlier V.34 firmware 
versions in other models of modems.
The solution is to try to have up-to-date firmware in both the Optima's and 
the Motorolas.
(Currently running a Motorola Codex 3265 Fast V.34 with 7.7 firmware at 
me).
