It is am issue that I ran into when I tried to transfer my Verizon number to Vonage. Some special service options, such as extended calling area, are assigned specific exchanges (the first three digits after the area code) by Verizon. When I established my Verizon service years ago, I asked for a service that required one of these exchanges. Vonage won't transfer a number that uses one of the special exchanges. I ended up using the temporary number Vonage assigned during signup as my permanent number, and then canceled Verizon service. Aside: One convenient thing I did was to unplug the Verizon service connector at the box outside my house. I then was able to plug the Vonage VOIP box directly into the wall, and provide phone service to all the jacks in my house.
