I think it is possibler to over use "Said".  I also think it's
possible to be awkward and stilted in an attempting too hard to avoid it. 
That's the nature of the failure pointed out in the lexicon.  Thay're not
saying you should never use anything but said.  They're saying that if the
choice is "Said" or sounding stupid, go ahead and use the word
"Said" .  And I agree with that.

It's about striking the right balance thaqt allows the right flow.
