Hello Thomas,
TU> Ahem, where are the servers lan-driver loaded ?
Heck if I know :-) It really is a mystery!
TU> ** 3C501 is a very old 8bit card with only one buffer for
TU> transmit and receive; this may a problem on fast machines. Try
TU> another NIC or newer driver
TU> (ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/nic/3c501/new501.exe).
I asked 2 guys w/Internet access to get it. One got 501.zip
which had 3C501.EXE. This is a diagnostics util that I would like
to have more data on. I have figured out that:
E is echo
Ix is irq
Dx is DMA
Bxxx is address
3c501 1 tells me the hard controller is ok
3c501 d1 tells me the hard controller is not ok. DMA timeout
This also happens on the working workstation, so I don't know
how to use the util.
The other guy got the new501.exe. The executable (3x501.com, 12907
ytes)
is bad. It returns "divide overflow". The readme file says it is not
approved by 3com. It appears to be a fix for _slow_ computers, anyway.
TU> ** Try: NET.CFG Link Driver 3C501 Frame Ethernet_802.3 Protocol
TU> IPX o Ethernet_802.3
TU> some driver require the protocol statement.
Here is the net.cfg:
---
preferred server = AFWC
file handles=60
show dots = on
eoj=off
Protocol Stack IPX
Bind 3C501
Link Driver 3C501
Port 300
int 5
dma 1
mem EC00
Frame Ethernet_802.3
Protocol IPX o Ethernet_802.3 (i just added this line at your
suggestion)
---
I pulled the modem and soundcard - booted from a floppy, loading setver.
Just set buffers=30, files=60, lastdrive=x, device=c:\dos\setver.exe
no success.
TU> ** Server may be out of connection slots. Some versions of
TU> netware will respond a out of conenction simply as server not
TU> found
It is a ten user version. I have run two workstations before, using
the same cables. Perhaps I don't know what you mean by connection slots.
Eureka! Read next post.
Regards, Barry
