Access security is powerful but no fun to implement. I'm no expert at it
myself, although I've done it before. The first thing you should do is make
a backup of the current SYSTEM.MDA (or .MDW for Access 95). The last thing
you want to do is lock yourself out of Access. (You could always reinstall,
but what a pain.)
Use the workgroup administrator to create a new workgroup. Give it a
file name different from SYSTEM.MDx. Then join the workgroup. Start Access.
Set a password for the Admin user. (That's who you'll currently be logged
in as.) Exit Access and restart. You'll have to enter the password you just
set.
Create a new user: you. !! ADD YOURSELF TO THE ADMINS GROUP !! Exit
Access and restart. (Yes, this is the third time you've had to start
Access.) Sign in as you. If you're using Access 2.0, delete the Admin user.
Access 95 won't let you do this, so you'll just have to remove all
permissions from Admin in that version.
Remove key permissions from the Users group. Add new users. I won't go
into the full details of what permissions do. You should be able to find
some information about them in the help file.
The book I learned about Access security from was the Access 2 Developer's
Guide by Sams publishing. Don't know if that helps you in Australia.... It's
an excellent book.
There is a security wizard for Access 2.0 which can be obtained from
Microsoft. It comes built in to Access 95.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me more.
