JN> CPSC, NuTone Inc. Announce Recall of Ceiling Exhaust Fan and
JN> Light Units
JN> WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer
JN> Product Safety Commission (CPSC), NuTone Inc. of Cincinnati,
JN> Ohio, is recalling more than 500,000 Ceiling Exhaust Fan
JN> and Light units. The light socket in these units could be
JN> wired incorrectly, which presents an electrical shock hazard
JN> when replacing the light bulb.
[ ... much text deleted ... ]
While I am not knocking the CPSC's announcement, the
arrangement of it makes it harder on readers than it needs to
be.
Not until the 31st line of the text do they mention
that these were sold in 1996 and 1997. This would seem to be
the most significant bit of information, rather than relegating
it to far down in the announcement.
There must be tens of millions of NuTone ceiling
exhaust fans and light units out there that have been installed
and in service for many years--well over 30 years in the case
of the ones in my house, and I know of many still in service
in other houses that are several decades older than that.
There is nothing in the announcement until the 31st
line of text to note that only quite new units (in the context
of permanent installations in buildings) are involved in the
recall.
This must be a very small subset of all the NuTone
units installed, and the notice would be much less opaque if
the dates of sale appeared much earlier in the notice.
