BG> Just a quick response to your last message. Freeman Decorating
BG> was looking for a "in house" person to do sound for their shows...
BG> have you done any work with them. I've done two shows for them here so
BG> far, but only as a typical IA flunky, not on sound. A gig is a gig!
I've done decorating through Freeman here, and in Dallas and in Austin...
Unfortunately Freeman in TX splits up the various specialties (decorators
work under FDC, IATSE folks work under the Audio/Visual branch...) Like
today's install for Kid's Fair at the Alamodome on Sunday, there were folks
from all the different diversities there working under the respective unions.
It's The Freeman Companies here (with FDC a branch under, specializing only
in decorating). Jeff (the s-o) worked the install today and said there were
"guys on the catwalks hanging signs, something that is usually done by the
decorators with snorks - but on this particular occasion IATSE riggers were
used because of the heighth of the ceiling and the rigging involved.
There are so many folks in the SA, Austin, and DFW areas that have a lot more
experience with sound than I. You know how difficult it is to be a female
and taken seriously. Most folks think you either a ding-bat or crazy for
dealing with all that equipment. Even after doing such a bang up job the
other night at the show, still the person offered the steady work was the s-o
(since the band figured I'd rather be singing and performing!). It didn't
matter that I was the one who was tweeking the mix; he was 6'3" worth of
bulk, brawn to muscle it around. (Maybe they needed a bouncer, instead!
There's still a lot of breaking down barriers on previously gender
specific jobs. I still get asked (could be cause I'm 5'2"), "You mean you do
decorating and you used to run sound? Aren't those males jobs?"
BG> Talk later, Terence Nordyke is here in town and we're going to
BG> go visit Kenn Fink in Sebastpol, and then hit Terry's apt in S.F.
BG> Talking a lot of sound, music, recording and synthesis with some of
Fidonets most interesting folk this week... what a treat.
And I can't be there....
