Okee dokee.  Same version I tried.  I think it might be the kernel and would
explain the need for a patch if true.  I don't think it was anything I did as I
have read about similar issues elsewhere.

I'll have to check what arch is doing kernel-wise but I already suspect they
are deploying a kernel patch not unlike other distributions.  One thing I
notice is that the 3.18 branch isn't quite as flakey as the 3.17 branch was and
understand why gentoo quickly backed away from that particular kernel.  I am
not sure if anyone else was using 3.17 kernels.  Speaking for myself I might
wait until 3.20 before attempting it again.  I am in no rush.
