=-> Quoting MICHAEL DOYLE to MARTIN RIDGLEY:
MR> I'm a big Robert Fripp/King Crimson fan ... I guess it's pretty
MR> derivative stuff - arguably not the most accessible material for
MR> pure musical enjoyment. ;-)
MD> "Derivitive Stuff?" You can't be serious, their stuff was so
MD> ORIGINAL.
Oooops! Sorry, Michael. Occasionally I get to
typing without thinking and this was one of those moments. You can
tell because I've actually sort of contradicted myself in that first
statement. What I meant to say was that it is probably somewhat
inaccessible music to most ears.
MR> I've gone off and on with Adrian Belew.
MD> That surprises me, Martin. I would have thought you would be really
MD> into him, as I know you are a Beatles fanatic, and IMHO, one of
MD> Adrian's biggest influences IS the Beatles.
I *am* really into him, but I can't always get into his solo works.
MD> His vocal phrasings, on his solo albums especially, remind me so
MD> much of Lennon's, the way he trails off, goes out of the normal
MD> major/minor modes sometimes, and the occasional primal SCREAM.
Yeah, he is sometimes reminiscent of Lennon. I love Adrian Belew's
guitar playing and I generally like his vocal style, but something
about the timbre of his voice gets on my nerves sometimes. Also, I
don't always enjoy his songwriting - on his solo albums, that is.
For my tastes, the most enjoyable music he's ever made was on the two
albums with The Bears (_The Bears_ (1987), and _Rise and Shine_ (1988)).
That was a wonderfully quirky, original sounding pop/rock band!
MD> Anyway, happy listening Martin, and thank you for taking such good
MD> care of the Beatles FIDO echo.
Thanks, Michael! I try - but I think it's really all the great
participants we've got on there that makes it such a great echo. :-)
Cheers,
Martin
