Max can log that.
From my MAX.LOG :
# 14 Apr 09:38:49 MAX  External program: "ErrorLevel 89 ADNetBre"
+ 14 Apr 09:49:49 MAX  Return from external application
And from my MENUS.CTL :
        Display_File misc\ADNetBRe            Worthy/!1 "ADNet BRE"
  nodsp xtern_erlvl 89_ADNetBre               Worthy/!1 "A"
Putting in the _TEXT after the errorlevel number like that causes MAX to log 
the rest of the text on that line.
