=-> Quoting Stuart Dubois to David Marheine:

That's apparently true. In early 1971, King Crimson was looking for
a bass players and a singer - preferably someone who could do both.
Boz Burrell (who was not a bassist) was eventually chosen as KC's new
lead vocalist. In the meantime, Fripp auditioned over 30 bassists with
no luck. One day, Boz was fooling around on a bass and Fripp decided
it would be possible to teach him how to play the instrument! They
started rehearsals in late February 1971 and by April were ready to
play their first gigs!
D> Well, that would explain the singing, anyhow. It's a good thing
D> Adrian already knew how when he joined.
Initially, I believe Adrian Belew was concerned about joining a
band that he felt was musically over his head. As I understand it,
Robert Fripp had to talk him into joining King Crimson.
SD> Still, for a world-class anal retentive like Fripp, I found it
Hmmm... why would you describe him that way ?.....
SD> difficult to imagine he wouldn't just go find someone who already
SD> knew how to sing and play bass...it's not an unusual combination.
True, it's not an unusual combination, but I think Fripp has always
been concerned with personal and ideological harmony as well as musical
harmony. He searches for the right combination of people and attitudes
as well as for musicianship.
I think most people would consider Robert Fripp to be somewhat pedantic
and possibly a bit eccentric, but I think `anal retentive' is far too
negative a term to describe his particular idiosyncrasies. He's a highly
inventive guitarist and it's hard to argue with the results of his work.
I certainly think he would be an awkward person to work with, but I have
to say that (for the most part anyway) I understand, and can't entirely
disagree with his theories on fostering creativity and the process and
performance of music.
Cheers,
Martin
