Well, I didn't know about it before. :-)

Actually, most of the people in these hotel bars tend to be local
professionals who dress up real nice. I think the reason it
works better than "ladies" night is that the ladies who want
to get screwed want to see men dressed in expensive clothes
blowing big money on drinks. It's ok too for the lady to blow
money, but she wants to feel like she's at a fancy place.

Yeah, but that's not until some guy they like picks them up.
They might wait an hour or two for a decent man they find
attractive to saunter up. So in the meantime, they're
stuck footing the bill.

And most women don't go out alone looking to get laid especially
on the cheap either with tons of horny men and cheap women around.
That's why such women prefer the business hotel bar route.

Interesting. In Poland and Ukraine, the dance clubs usually
charge the fee only for the men. Young men largely do not
have a lot of spare cash for these clubs unless they're
taking out their girlfriends and (unlike in the US),
I didn't see a lot of young women go out in groups to
dance the night away with each other.

So what I suspect happens is that the discount kind of exists
to encourage the men to bring a date.

Consider that the eastern bloc nations are culturally similar
to the US during the 1970's: They are breaking out of a cultural
straight jacket of communism (while the US was breaking out
of puritanism) and women are eager to show that they aren't
going to try to double dip.

Back in the 70's and early early 80's, I saw a lot of young American
women ready to pay for their drinks too, no strings attached.
That changed as the women felt some degree of security in
the workplace.

I wouldn't judge the whole eastern bloc by Moscow. That's a very
special place. :-) In fact, I would probably be just as
apprehensive about dating a Moscow girl as I would a NYC girl.

There are were areas in the US where the legal age of adulthood
was lower for women than men. I don't know if they fixed the laws.
Also, women kind of were able to sneak into bars earlier than
men (a kind of "ladies night") rule.

The US is F'ed up in that they really take the 21 age limit
on alcohol seriously as if it were hard narcotics. It's
not uncommon to see enforcers out to check IDs and see if
everyone, even young women, are of legal age so the barkeeps
are getting a bit more stringent about checking the women's
ids as well.
