Terry May was thrown for a loss after he said:
TM> That's probably true, but a lot of that is probably Tiger's newness.
I think it goes beyond that. Rob commented about how the sport needed Tiger
and David didn't seem to be buying it. The sad truth for golf is that they
NEEDED someone like Tiger Woods because the game had become stagnant. USA
Today commented that tournaments may now be broken down into those with and
those without Woods. The tournament that he just passed up, the MCI Classic,
had its lowest ratings ever and the PGA Seniors had its lowest ratings since
1990.
If you look at it, golf really hasn't had anyone like Tiger for a long time
and it started to become more and more of an "old man's" game. Many of the
younger guys that I've worked with didn't even think about golfing until
Tiger came around and made it *cool* again. What was once the *target
audience* was aging with the last group of individuals to bring in the *next
generation* of fans. This is even more pronounced than what has happened to
baseball in that time.
