Hello Maurice.

14 Oct 03 21:49, you wrote to me:

Fidonet is and always will be about the sysop's choice. Linux is not the
only OS out there, nor will it ever be. The sysops have the right to choose
what they will run, and any improvements of Fidonet software should
recognize whatever OS's are popular with the network's sysops.

FYI, the reason I am posting on this subject, and the reason I have posted
in here before is because I actually have working distros of Linux on two
of my machines, and I may eventually switch my hub and BBS systems over to
Linux. That doesn't mean I don't see merit in working for those who choose
to use different OS's, and that includes anything that is or becomes
popular. You can't just ignore the number of Windows machines out there,
and if you think it's going away anytime soon, you're kidding yourself.

Linux, although greatly improved recently, still has a helluva long way to
go to match the ease of use, hardware compatibility and software
availability that Windows has. I'm no fan of Bill Gates, and I'm all for
Linux becoming better and better, but I still recognize the usefulness of
even quite older OS's; in fact, I'm still running a 1994 distro of Windows
NT because it's a damn sight more stable than anything else from Microsoft.
Hell, just look at Unix; it's about as old as rocks, IBM hasn't completely
given up on OS/2, and the Amiga OS is still being developed; who knows, one
day it might just make a comeback.

Then there's new ideas, like the Java OS...
