Observe the Overbearing Mother Hen in her natural habitat - a gathering
of men. Being unable to stand the thought of unsupervised men talking
amongst themselves, she can always be found near them. She must make
sure that nothing bad is said about women, and that she's there to
gripe of she thinks it has been done.
It is often difficult to distinguish this feral, maladapted species
from an ordinary female poster, but this one gives it away. Note that,
in response to contrary position, she immediately becomes condescending
and instructive, like a nursery school teacher who forgets she's not in
class.
Zoologists don't have a theory on why the Overbearing Mother Hen does
this, but a zoology professor at the University of Manitoba suggests it
may be that the Overbearing Mother Hen resents dissenting opinion,
especially from men, and does what little she can to discourage it.
The writing of online Hens tends to verify this, after examination of
alternatives to their typical squawking.
For instance, consider the preachy statement, "If you truly feel so
strongly about this issue, then don't vote!" This demand adds nothing
to the thread, which would carry the same meaning from post to post
with or without the Hen post. However, suppose the Hen had looked at
the idea of giving up the vote to protest anti-male injustice. This
would be similar to the writing expected of a man, which may read,
"Jane, why would it help men for you to stop voting? Wouldn't voting
be a more effective way to help men?"
It is a shame that the Overbearing Mother Hen is studied so little,
mostly due to a lack of interest.
