I have never seen anything that suggests a Jazz drive could read Zip media.  
My guess is no.  If it were possible, Iomega would be shouting about it.
Your observation about speed is right on target.  Everything is a trade off.  
Tape is cheap, sequential access media.  Jazz is more expensive, random 
access.  Hard drives are the most expensive ramdom access.  Most times you 
get what you pay for.
