 Just looked it up to make sure you side is true. Found out, that
 is what he said, but he chose two songs that were clearly left
 wing in the context of the Vietnam war.

 And when he went to Vietnam to entertain the troops he was asked
 if that would turn him into a Hawk. He said, no, but watching
 the wounded come in and visiting them might turn you into a dove
 with claws.

 IOW, he may have said he didn't have time to learn the songs,
 but it is clear he didn't much like the philosophy behind it.

 And when he was visiting Billy Grahm, and Graham called Nixon,
 after he had left the whitehouse, he wanted Cash to speak to
 Nixon. Cash said, "He doesn't want to hear from me." Though he
 did talk to Nixon for a few minutes. No record of what they
 said.

 Did you leave that out for some reason? Didn't think anyone
