-=> Bob Ackley wrote to Dave Drum <=- DD> Under whatever name - the union has a "closed shop" DD> agreement with the employer which is enforceable in all but DD> right-to-work states. And this is a problem for you - just DD> how? BA> Nebraska is a RTW state, and union membership *is* a requirement if you BA> work for the UPRR, which is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. I went BA> to a cattle call UP held for prospective employees (crew schedulers) BA> and sat through half a day of briefings on the company and its work BA> rules (union membership *IS* a requirement). Then Nebraska does not have a true Right To Work law. Just something masquerading as one. BA> The sticking point for me was that there would have been no fixed BA> shift or work days, one had to wait until one was called to come BA> in, and then one had to arrive within 45 minutes; it is not possible BA> to drive from my house to downtown Omaha in 45 minutes, assuming BA> I was ready to depart as soon as I got the phone call. That's irrelevant to a closed or open shop or union shop discussion. You could have had the job if you were willing to abide by their requirements. As railroad jobs (and their attendant retirement plans) are plums to the blue-collar workforce I am sure that Union Pacific filled all their openings. Apparently you didn't wish to meet their requirements ... I don't see that as a fault of the railroad, or a union. It's a matter of personal choice. And a perfect example of the golden rule. ENJOY!!!
