Replying to a message of BOB KLAHN to BOB ACKLEY:

BA>> law. Had *I* been the governor I would have announced that

 BK> ...

BA>> (a) I would veto another helmet law and (b) the day federal
BA>> funds were cut off would be the day that I-80 would not be
BA>> patrolled or maintained - to include plowing snow and
BA>> finding, investigating or cleaning up any accidents or
BA>> other mishaps - until those funds were reinstated.

BK> Do you have any idea how much of a disaster that would be
BK> for the state? The loss of a major transportation artery
BK> would be really really bad.

Only for the truck stops, and there aren't all that many of those.
Omaha, Lincoln, York, Grand Island and North Platte. Most westbound
truckers hit the truck stops in Council Bluffs rather than Omaha, fuel
is noticeably cheaper in Iowa (gasoline at the convenience store in Malvern,
IA, is about 10 cents/gallon cheaper than gasoline at Offutt AFB's *on-base*
station).

There *are* other roads for those needing them.

BK> As to patrolling, if it's anything like Ohio the local
BK> communities would pick it up to get the fines.

 BK> ...

BA>> The only law a state needs on the books WRT motor vehicle
BA>> safety is that the failure to use protective equipment is
BA>> grounds for being held at fault for injuries
BA>> such equipment would have prevented or mitigated. That's

BK> And carry insurance to compensate those who have to clean
BK> up the corpse, and those suffing emotional distress from
BK> the sight. Get someone's brains splattered against my
BK> windshield and I want to be compensated for my emotional
 BK> distress.

Insurance isn't safety equipment. IMO anybody that operates a motor
vehicle without at least liability insurance is an idiot.
