Bonobos are attractive to modern people. However, one big reason they
are the way they are is that they occupy a much more narrow niche in
the environment than chimps. It is also a safer niche.
Modern Sweden can make pacifistic noises and emphasize the welfare
aspects of government. Countries surrounded by dangerous enemies might
wish that they could live that way, but wishing will not help much and
so they learn to be successful militarily or lose independence to a
country which is.
If a group of bonobos and a group of chimps both needed to occupy
the same tree, everybody can imagine the outcome. For better or worse,
this explains a lot.
