Don't really need a wand, some of those chips can be read from a distance
of several feet.  One can be scanned and not even know it, the scanners aren't
all that big and can be hidden in almost anything.

An early version of the technology is represented by the sensors at some stores'
entrances/exits that set off an alarm if somebody is walking out with something
that hasn't had its implant neutralized (IOW, shoplifting).
