Rich is an ultrageek not an executive. That should be obvious by his
communication style. Ballmer on the other hand is a motivationalist exec,
he would have a whole different perspective to offer and be open to
discussions about missing segments of the market that Rich refuses to even
think of as significant.
An example, if I say to Rich that they should have 2 versions of windows,
"Windows with Wizards" and "Windows for Wizards" he
argues that the second wouldn't sell enough to make it worthwhile. Someone
like Ballmer would see me saying "you can charge more for a version
with less and in the process stop leaking high end bleeding edge users to
the dark side" and that might make sense to him.
