For the most part he was just repeating an urban legend that has been
circulating for 38 years.  Until Cash corrected the story years later, most
people assumed it was true.  But Bob just couldn't stop himself from taking
it one step too far, with his "he said" attribution of Cash's reaction to
the request.  It was wholly made up.
