Those jobs are apprenticeship jobs. Now days they are entered
through testing and independent review, but they then trian
in the union. Often the union has classrooms for the school
portion of the training.

Where you have to join the union after hiring it's called a
union shop. If you have to be union before you are hired it's a
closed shop. I believe, since the apprentices are hired before
they are in the union, there are no more closed shops.
Though it wouldn't surprise me if there was one somewhere.
