Ok, maybe it's not needed for compiling, maybe it's just needed for
./configure to properly run or for make buid_install to work.  I don't
remember where I hit the error, but I know there is an error someplace in
the standard build scripts if you don't have the max-3.03-etc.tar-gz file
downloaded and extracted.
