This is to be expected for any service which operates
on government handouts. It is political anytime you have
government subsidies, and those who say there should be no
politics in Amtrak operations avoid the issue that all
government assistance is politics.
This argument goes back to the pleading for federal
assistance for "internal improvements" in the early 1800s.
It was canals and the "national road" then, but it will
always be political.
