You could get a jail term here also, but it would be highly unusual for
popping a guy who made a pass at your wife. I understand your thoughts, but I
also understand the purpose of the law. Let's look at the other side of the
coin and say the guy assaults you first, just for general principles, and
then he makes a pass at your wife. Maybe he outweighs you 50 lbs., hits
you again, and says want to do something about that punk?
One of the basic fundamentals of our society is the opposite of survival of
the fittest. If you are the proverbial 90 lbs. weakling, you should be able
to have a life in America. Protection of the weak, the young, and the elderly
comes under the same argument. You shouldn't have to be the baddest guy on
the block to be able to get married, have a family, and be happy.
You say that the law should stay out of something like this. We are allowed
to use discretion if the circumstances warrant it, but if either of the
combatants wish to file charges, we don't have much of a choice.
