Ok.  Then there is a problem with character interpretation on reading the
TCP/IP pipe.  This is probably also an issue with some other functions. 
This tells me we do not have an 8-bit clean telnet pipe.  Please note that
some telnet clients only use 7-bit and not 8-bit clean pipes, and that some
telnet (user) code might do some character translations.....

I would not be suprised if there is a CR/LF issue, or a control character
issue, on top of a 7 vs 8 bit clear channel issue.
