My phone is 20 characters across by 7 lines for the usable area.

looks like that is about the limit, actually the first line is shorter
because it has the subject (re: test) as the first part of the first line.
It's stupid the way it displays messages, the top line of the screen is
like the top line of a window with a header that shows battery status and
signal strength, then the second line is like a window title and just says
"inbox" so you've already wasted 20% of the screen, then at the
bottom is another header line that says "erase reply options" so
now you've wasted more of the screen and you are left with 7 usable lines
of text as shown above.
