Being one of the few here who have a) served, and b) have Viet Nam era
credit I can give you some honest input. I went into the Navy at 19 - a
confirmed peacenik who hates structure and authority (still do). Scary
time, as we were in an undeclared war situation and classmates were being
killed. I went Dental - with training in the Operating Room, meaning I
could easily have been sent to a MASH type unit or a hospital ship. I would
have had no problem going inspite of my pacifist beliefs mainly because I
would have been directly involved in saving lives and easing discomfort.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. For a younger person with no clear
path in life, it is an excellent start. As you will have finished college,
you would most likely be an officer, and that notation on your resume is as
good as gold with many companies. It shows you can make a commitment and
abide by it, and you will get a good chance to practice your management
skills. Even if you went enlisted, I would recommend it with one caveat...
qualify for and go to a school. In some cases you advance faster, and
military training is a great key to better wages and starting positions on
the outside world.

Over 20 years after I got out, I have few regrets about the 4+ years of
active duty and 10 years of inactive reserve commitment. Make your choices,
qualify for the path you choose, and aim high... I know full well you can
do it, and do well with it.

pondering what to do from this point on in life. I recently hit upon the
idea of the military, was wondering if people could offer input, horror
stories, advice, warnings, etc. Anything would be appreciated.
