I'll just post it here so that if anyone else is interested they can readily
download whatever using whatever ftp client they have available and we'll see
where that goes ... yeah right.  ;-)

Let's start with this;

No rush as far as I am concerned.  I uploaded the basic bash function I am
currently using for unpacking and you can decide it you want to replicate it. 
Feel free to edit it to suit.  I have the call to tar to make backups of raw
pkts so that recycled filenames don't get overwritten which can and does
happen.  Other than that only sed, gawk and tr are called to create a new
messages file with the format specified be gawk, the result being a formatted
file with one message per line, with the fields null padded.  The tr call
ensures that all linefeeds are changed to a seldom if ever used ascii control
character and can be safely stripped if desired.  I leave them in so I can see
who is doing that silliness.  ;-)

Also the last sed call strips out the seen-bys and paths so if you wish to keep
them you can safely delete that particular part.

I think that covers it.  Let me know if it doesn't.
