Why don't men "want" successful women?  You are asking the wrong
question. The real issue is that women virtually never want a guy
sexually whom they perceive to be less powerful and successful than
they are. So, a rich, successful woman might want to date or  marry
(for a variety of reasons) a less successful guy but she will be
lusting much more for her boss.
For a guy to avoid a woman who believes that she is more
successful than he is makes tremendous good sense. Because the odds are
that she would be just temporarily faking it with him - for some
mischeivious reason.
Where M. Dowd etc. go astray is forgetting that the fact that
their own psyche is not the whole universe. Since they find it
unthinkable or demeaning to be with "unequal" guys, they do not grasp
the fact that the guys they really want are exactly the same guys that
every woman wants. Younger, hotter ones with much less baggage and much
less damaged by man-hating feminism.
Women say they want smart guys. What do you think a smart guy
would do in this situation?
