subject: PRINCESS UPDATE

Princess de Jendayo is doing great. She's in a cage during the days now,
and is weaning well, down to 1 or 2 feedings a day, depending on her
moods. She decided she prefers to eat from her daily syringe while
standing directly under my chin in cuddle position--this makes for
interesting mealtimes. She can fly like a pro, and after one early
misadventure with a wall and ceiling, she has ALWAYS landed where she
aimed. She flys better than any of the boys ever did; but her goal is
NOT to go explore the house, as they did--she only flys TO ME. She's a
mama's girl, that's for sure.
Her owner-to-be came over to meet her yesterday. It was love at first
sight. That nonsense about having to handfeed a baby to bond to it IS
hogwash--the lady fell in love and started crying as soon as Princess
cuddled against her neck the first time. Princess' name will be
"Sunrise", which I feel is perfect for her. She'll be leaving here soon
as I'm comfortable that she's fully weaned, probably within 2 to 3
weeks.
And it won't be a moment too soon, unfortunately, as I'll need the
space--her next-in-line sibling is hatching even as I write this! There
will, again, be only one baby in this clutch. BUT there WERE 3 fertile
eggs (2 of which stopped development after about 5 days), so I'm
encouraged to hope that future clutches will have more babies. Based on
experience other friends have had, I suspect that the recent huge lines
of major thunderstorms with constantly rising and falling barometers had
something to do with the dead eggs. Maybe winter clutches will have
better luck--they'll get to try again after Christmas.
It's going to be busy around here for the next few months...cherry-heads
are on 2 or 3 fertile eggs, tiels are on at least 4 fertile eggs, and a
new jenday arriving today or tomorrow!
