hard at all since the moderators are suppose to screen this garbage
out for the users.

This generally only happens in UNMODERATED groups. In
moderated usenet groups, the messages must be approved before they can
be posted. Unless the "moderator(s)" are just passing EVERYTHING
along instead of moderating like they're suppose to, this crap should
not reach the reader.
GC> A moderator can do very little about this unless it's illegal.
A moderator can just toss it out.
GC> I just wouldn't worry too much about it right now.
Well, I'm worrying about it because I'm probably not going to
be using my local BBS after the end of this month. An automated gated
mailing list (you'd have to subscribe to get it and the moderator
could kick you off if required and only take action when there's a
problem if it's automated with a script) would solve this problem.
Whether you believe it or not, the Internet *is* affecting
Fido indirectly because it's putting a *lot* of local BBSs out of
business. The one I'm planning to drop at the end of the month just
had to cut half its phone lines because everyone's dropping their
accounts and getting Internet accounts, which offer FAR more bang for
the buck. If this keeps up, they might be gone in another couple of
years too. And this BBS has been around since 1981! In the past two
years, it's the first time they've actually LOST members, and in
RECORD amounts. AUDIO is just about the only Fido group I still read
because I can get similar Usenet groups that have little or no LAG,
unlike Fido. I can't justify the cost of this BBS for just 5 messages
a day. I think I can get on Fido through an internet TELNET capable
BBS, but most of them want money too.
