You need to read up on WW II Japan.  In addition to last ditch defense by its
remaining military, Japan was training its people to use knives, spears and
pikes to attack the US invasion forces.  Japan also had a couple of hundred
aircraft remaining that could be used as suicide bombers.  Back when I was
on Okinawa there was a display that showed the plans for 'Operation Olympic' -
the invasion of the Japanese home islands.  US casualties were projected to
be in the hundreds of thousands, Japanese casualties far higher.  One doesn't
need to be (a) God to project future behavior based on past behavior.

Ross pointed out the Japanese defense of Tarawa, but he forgot to mention both
Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.  Japanese soldiers simply would not surrender.

Shucks, up through at least the 1960s an occasional Japanese soldier or small
unit of Japanese soldiers was found in the jungles of Pacific islands.  They
would not surrender even then until an officer of the Japanese military was
brought in and ordered them to.
