StarWho has been released and will do as you describe above...

I was hoping to put a tape drive on my system during my recent hardware 
upgrade (well...the upgrade turned into a whole new system...got carried 
away) but after getting my 3.1GB drive, I didn't have the budget for it. 
Maybe next time.
