The following paragraph is quoted from the Business
section of The Washington Post for June 26, 1996.
"Walt Disney Co. said Leo O'Donovan, president of
Georgetown University, was elected to its board. O'Donovan,62, a Catholic
priest, has been Georgetown's president since 1989."
I called Shareholder Services at Disney for more
information. According to the Disney Company bylaws, the
Board of Directors has authority to increase the number of
seats on the Board, which was done. The Board also has the authority to fill
a vacancy (including one created by their creation of a new seat) with the
appointment valid until the next Annual Meeting where the seat will be filled
as part of the regular election process.
Father O'Donovan, a Jesuit, is generally held in very
high regard in the Washington DC area. Georgetown is run by the Jesuits.
I wonder if this action by Disney is in response to the Southern Baptist
Convention boycott. If so, in my opinion, it probably will not cause the SBC
people to change their mind as at least part of their leadership tends to not
consider
