Hello Paul,
CH>> happens to work
PW> /Terminate/ is, yes, but what about all the uplinks? If you're
PW> pointing from a BBS run from, for example, an Acorn, Amiga,
PW> whatever then you wouldn't be able to use JAR.
I _still_ dont see a problem, most points use whatever is availble for
_their_ platform.. So miggy users would probably plump for LHA anyway,
others use PkZip Arj, Rar etc on most BBS's I know of.. The software
allows for the use of whatever packer/unpacker the user needs.
I've yet to _see_ any _universal archive format anywhere in fido wrt to
users/points, most use whatever they have available or just happen to
prefer.. So the addition of JAR, in either 16 or 32bit versions wouldnt
exclude anyone using _other_ archivers. But for tranfering mail via the
internet to distant points it seemingly works quite well:-)
Like anything else in comms it simply requires that both ends of a link
use the same protocol...
CH>> I run Os/2 Warp 3.0 as you know:-) But Jar16 works ok here, the
PW> Didn't, actually. What's it like? When I eventually get money to
PW> upgrade, Warp is one of the things I plan to try.
Considering the age of some of the components on my PC it works just
fine:-) I can multi-task when needed, play games like quake even using
old slow access esdi HDD's and an old vga monitor, the main problem in
shifting OS's is gettinbg new versions of the software you like to
use:-) At least with OS/2 it can and does run a good deal of Dos
Software and a fair bit of Win stuff as well, but not AFAIK Win95 32bit
stuff... The main problem software areas are in stuff like TapeBackup
software, where an OS/2 specific program is needed due to EA's and the
use of LFN's on HPFS partitions etc.. Same goes for HDD compression
software, stuff like Stacker for Dos wont work, needs and OS/2 specific
version etc.
Of course I'm only running Warp 3.0 not OS/2 Merlin [v4.0] so I donmt
need as much disk space as THAT requires or as much memory for VoiceType
the speach software.. That pushes ones system requirements up quite a
bit AFAIK. 32Meg of Ram for VoiceType I hear.. and a P133 or higher
CPU.. Wont be for me for quite some time:-) Not untill I can move up
from my present 5x86/133 P75+ equiv.. and I only have 16meg of ram..
half whats reqd:-( With a good lottry win I'd probably go for OS/2's SMP
software anyway:-) And a 4 CPU MoBo etc.. all the luvverly stuff dreams
are made of:-))))
CH>> versions running
PW> Can't you just add it as an external compression utliity? Most of
PW> the programs I've used have the internally identified ones, then a
PW> "default" which is only called if none of the others match. Surely
PW> TerMail lets you do that? If not, it's even worse than I thought!
Sure I can add more to TM.CFG's packers/unpackers, but TM also has the
ability to _recognise_ archovers from their header info, and the older
Version doesnt wrt to JAR.. the new version does:-) And its in beta test
now, so I probably wont have much longer to go before I can do a deltree
/y of the old Terminate v4.0 directory:-)
CH>> back by
PW> :) Wise move!
I'm not quite as daft as I may appear from time to time:-)))
Cheers,
Cliff
