Ah!  I have seen simular things on other graphic cards.  Do you have a
kernel with framebuffers enabled for your particular graphics card/chip?

I wouln't know.  That has never happened to me.  Even back when I had my
first PC I had a compiler on DOS.  Later on I switched to DJGPP since it
most closely resembled gcc.  A little buggy but at least I didn't have to
worry so much about portability.  Fortran was a whole other can of worms. 
I'm glad those days are behind me although every once and awhile I get the
urge to break out some source.  It goes away though.  :-)
