Give men a break
Sir - A new year has begun but nothing has changed - the Life
supplement is still bashing men ('Could you be a dinosaur dad?'). How
about some new year resolutions - no more labelling of men as
"dinosaurs", no more "What men want and how to see they
don't get it",
no more pseudo scientific twaddle about men being "programmed" to be
dangerous drivers, etc.
Instead, some attention could be given to the following:
* Men's much lower life expectancy and excessively high incidence of
homicide, suicide and accidental death.
* Boys-only schools being hellholes of homophobic bullying.
* Boys' continued gross under-performance in the educational system
(related to the previous point).
* The immoral sexist family law system (Our local paper published a
letter from a father who was not allowed to see his little daughter for
four successive Christmases - the feast of the family how are ye?)
* Thousands of careful and considerate drivers who continue to be
viciously penalised by the motor insurance companies for the 'crime' of
being male. And please don't tell me about boy-racers etc. This has
absolutely nothing to do with me. No other group in society could be
tarred with the one brush in this fashion. Even Bush and Blair have
stated that 9/11 and other atrocities have nothing whatever to do with
ordinary decent Muslims.
* Large areas of employment are female dominated - in particular in the
health service. And it has been calculated that if present trends
continue the last male primary teacher will have retired by 2035.
There are many other issues I could deal with challenging the
simplistic idea that it's still very much a man's world. Women are
under-represented in politics and the top levels of the Civil Service.
- no one interested in genuine sexual equality, as I am, would attempt
to defend this. So feminists thinking of writing to revile me as a
'male chauvinist' (or maybe a 'dinosaur'!) intent on turning back the
clock, can save themselves the bother.
