I try to avoid using Word to edit files that reside on network drives. I
edit them locally and then copy them. More than once, I have had a Word
document become badly corrupted because there was a network outage while
Word had the document opened. This seems to happen even though the document
had not been in a modified state for hours before the outage. Typically, I
would leave a document open overnight and the next day it would be screwed
up.
