BW> JC> Bill, we used to go into 4800-5000 ft Army strips in the
BW> JC> DC9-32F. We had brakes plus reverse and also put it on the
BW> JC> numbers. They were probably fast, worried about the touch down,
BW> JC> probably had less than full flaps, no drag,
BW>All of the above. They knew they didn't have flaps, but
BW>the lack of wheels came as a surprise.
BW> JC> floated and 7,000ft was the measured distance when it
BW> JC> was all through.
BW>It says, and I quote "The airplane touched down at 190
BW>knots with its landing gear up. It slid nearly 7,000 feet
BW>down the runway and onto the grass beside it."
That sounds about right to me. The 0 Flap speed as I recall was VRef
+70. Didn't realize that they had no flaps either. So the 7,000 ft
figure seems bout right. Sounds like the Operator in control did a
pretty fair job. Nine years in the DC-9 and only had two problems.
Sitting on Ramp the Battery Charger over heated and started smoking and
could have started a fire but didn't. On the Ramp at Charleston, SC.
the N1 gear drive shaft sheared on engine startup and lost accessories
and deposited metal throughout the engine. Required an engine change. I
personally can't say enough good about the DC-9 from my perspective.
Took it into some rather short fields for a jet and alway had confidence
about being able to depart safetly.
