The following news article from the New York Times can really be summed up in one sentence, as spoken by Maj. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza, who stated: "In practical terms, nothing will change" What general? Please say that again. "In practical terms, nothing will change" That is the real truth regarding America's war in Iraq supposedly coming to an end this coming August. Everything that the Obama administration has been saying regarding America's declining military involvement in Iraq is meant for public consumption, and public appeasement, because Obama needs to give the appearance of fulfilling another one of his campaign promises, even if he really isn't. So what else is new? The Obama White House is trying to foist an intentional mass media deception upon the American public, because I have no doubt that Obama, like George Bush before him, now realizes that the USA cannot totally abandon Iraq. The US is trapped there, whether it likes it or not. After all, the presence of American forces in Iraq is probably the only thing that is really preventing the current volatile situation there from deteriorating into something considerably worse, with the different Iraqi factions -- Shi'ites, Sunnis and Kurds -- tearing at each other's throats. In other words, the American presence in Iraq is probably the only thing that is keeping the country from sliding into fullscale civil war. As I have stated before, as hated as he may have been, Saddam Hussein at least knew how to keep the Sunnis, Shi'ites and Kurds under control, and the country prospered during his reign of terror. In contrast, under America's watch, Iraq has turned into an utter hellhole with people being blown up left and right. It has been seven years since America's illegal invasion of that nation, and Saddam Hussein was dethroned, yet Iraq still can't stand on its own two feet. Do you honestly believe that things will change for the better if America leaves? Just have a good look at the faces of some of those crooked Iraqi politicians, and then tell me again. What I also find totally idiotic, is America's announcement of its intentions to commence its pullout from Afghanistan beginning next summer. While I am totally opposed to war and all manner of violence, even I know that one continues to fight a war until all stated objectives have been met. It seems to me that the only reason why a country would take the unusual step of pre-announcing the end of a war -- as the USA is now doing with Afghanistan -- is because it has realized that it is fighting a lost cause, and that to continue fighting -- and dying -- is futile. So I can only conclude that the Obama administration has apparently realized that the war in Afghanistan is a no-win situation -- just as the Soviets came to realize the same thing some two decades ago -- and therefore, the Obama White House is going to pull this stunt, and try to save face, by attempting to make it appear as if the war has been won, and it is time to go home. The same thing happened in Vietnam. America lost that war, yet tried to save face, even as the communist Viet Cong marched into Saigon and took over the entire country. Oddly enough, today Vietnam is an American trading partner. But to suggest that the war in Afghanistan has been won, and that all objectives have been met, or will be met by Summer of next year, is the furthest thing from the truth. Karzai runs an extremely corrupt government which barely controls Kabul. The Taliban are growing stronger by the day, and have begun to take back the country. Another possible reason why America may be pulling out of Afghanistan, is because so many Afghan civilians have been erroneously killed by the US military, that even Karzai can't appease the Afghan masses any longer, at least those that he controls, but that is just a speculation on my part. In short, both the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have lost public support at home in the United States, as well as in the countries where they are being fought; and politicians, no matter how shrewd and how astute they may be, can only continue to wage a war for so long once that support has been lost. To continue such a war is political suicide, as every smart politician knows. Anyway, as I've always said, war is hell; war is evil; and war is demonic. Only idiots wage wars! Blessed are the peacemakers, and not the warmongers! War in Iraq Defies U.S. Timetable for End of Combat By TIM ARANGO - NYT July 2, 2010 NEAR TULUL AL-BAQ, Iraq -- President Obama has set an August deadline for the end of the combat mission in Iraq. Here at this makeshift desert camp in the insurgent badlands of northern Iraq, a mission is under way that is not going to stop then: American soldiers hunting terrorists and covertly watching an Iraqi checkpoint staffed by police officers whom the soldiers say they do not trust. "They're not checking anybody, and they're wondering why I.E.D.'s are getting in to town," said Staff Sgt. Kelly E. Young, 39, from Albertville, Ala., as he watched the major roadway that connects Baghdad with Mosul, regarded as the country's most dangerous city. He referred to improvised explosive devices, the military term for homemade bombs. The August deadline might be seen back home as a milestone in the fulfillment of President Obama's promise to end the war in Iraq, but here it is more complex. American soldiers still find and kill enemy fighters, on their own and in partnership with Iraqi security forces, and will continue to do so after the official end of combat operations. More Americans are certain to die, if significantly fewer than in the height of fighting here.
