Yeah, after thinking about it a bit it made sense to me that it must be
clearing the strobe.

This is very cool.  I've always used either PEEK/POKE or GET for single
keypresses depending on whether I needed to do anything while waiting.
Knowing I can use a hybrid of the two is really cool in that I don't
need to deal with ASCII codes (except with control characters) and can
continue to use strings all the time.
