| subject: | Heat Wave Hits Russia -- Global Warming? |
JS> Last Monday we discussed the heat waves that have been
JS> tormenting people in the USA. Well, as we saw then, it is a
JS> global trend which offers more proof that Global Warming is
JS> real. Now Russia is feeling the heat like never before.
JS> Read on.
Well, now maybe the right will listen.
JS> From Fires to Fish, Heat Wave Batters Russia
JS> By CLIFFORD J. LEVY - NYT
JS> July 29, 2010
JS> RYBKHOZ, Russia -- This is a country that knows how to
JS> handle the cold, swaggering about during the most brutal of
JS> winters. But the heat is another story. And there has never
JS> been heat like this.
JS> Here is how extreme it has become: Oymyakon in Eastern
JS> Siberia is considered one of the coldest places on Earth,
JS> with winter temperatures dropping to as low as minus 90
JS> degrees. On Thursday, the thermometer also read 90 degrees.
JS> Plus 90. In the evening.
What may seem to be a good thing from a distance, or in casual
thought, often is not when it happens. All enviornments are
designed around various factors. Change the factors and the
enviornment changes. Such changes will not be good immediately,
and it can take a long time for a new balance to establish.
JS> Much of Russia has been reeling. Forest fires have erupted.
JS> Drought has ruined millions of acres of wheat. More than
This was a subject of discussion on NPR's Morning Edition. Dried
up peat bogs in the neighborhood burn, emitting smoke that fills
the area.
JS> All week long, temperatures have been soaring to records,
JS> and on Thursday, they reached a new high for Moscow, 100
JS> degrees. July has been the hottest month since the city
JS> began taking such measurements under the czars, 130 years
JS> ago, officials said.
That was what they were talking about on Morning Edition.
JS> At the Biserovsky Fish Farm in this suburb of Moscow, Ivan
JS> Tyurkin trudged along a pier and surveyed the breeding
JS> ponds all around him. He did not need a thermometer to
JS> figure out that the water was treacherously tepid. Dead
JS> trout, drifting like buoys, were evidence enough.
When global warming first became a big issue some said it would
be a good thing, since that means growing seasons would be
longer further north. What they forgot is, growing food is a
complex process, and changing one element for what seems the
better will affect others, probably not favorably.
Any change will require adjustment, and the adjustment period
can be a disaster.
